Erma Swartz

Founder

Erma's journey is a remarkable tapestry woven with threads of resilience, empowerment, and self-discovery. Her artistic odyssey began at the tender age of 13, a youthful foray into the world of painting that would shape her life's trajectory.

Growing up, Erma's world was a crucible where her spirit was both tested and tempered by challenges of profound significance. She was compelled to attend a religious school, a stifling environment that perpetuated patriarchal traditions and stifled her creativity. Every day marked a struggle against the confining expectations of a society that often failed to recognize her intrinsic worth.

Yet, within these struggles, Erma's resilience was kindled, her identity forged in the crucible of adversity. She rejected the constraints imposed upon her, allowing her experiences to spark a relentless determination. With every brushstroke, she began to paint her own path to self-discovery and self-expression.

Mental illness is a constant companion in Erma's life, casting shadows that threaten to engulf her spirit. However, she has found solace and healing in her art. On the canvas, there are no judgments, no constraints, and no right or wrong. It is a realm where Erma can be herself, unencumbered by criticism or prejudice.

Erma's voyage to South America at the age of 19 was a transformative chapter in her life's narrative. The journey expanded her horizons and influenced her art and political philosophy. Immersed in the diverse cultures and landscapes of South America, she encountered a kaleidoscope of experiences and stories that deeply impacted her work and her commitment to social justice and equity.

Her art, enriched by the colors, patterns, and narratives of South America, became a vibrant reflection of her love for the region and her aspiration for a more inclusive world. Erma's time in South America deepened her understanding of the complexities of human experience and intensified her drive to combat various forms of oppression and inequality.

Erma's dedication to social and economic justice is unwavering. Her advocacy spans a wide range of issues, including racial and gender equality and economic fairness. She recognizes the interconnectedness of these challenges and tirelessly works to dismantle the barriers that perpetuate inequality.

Her art is not just a form of expression; it is a medium for social commentary and a platform for raising awareness. In the face of climate despair and societal oppression, Erma seeks to inspire hope and empower those who feel marginalized or disheartened.

Her relocation to Colorado at the age of 20 marked a new chapter in her life. There, she developed a profound connection with the outdoors, which she lovingly refers to as her sanctuary and place of worship.

Erma's commitment to shaping a better world has extended into her career, where she has collaborated with progressive politicians, advocating for inclusivity and equity. She believes in the transformative power of policy and systemic change to build a more just society, one where everyone has an equal opportunity to flourish.

Inspired by the urgent call of the climate crisis, Erma founded Reclaimed Collective in order to redefine our relationship with what is beautiful. She seeks to create a space free from overconsumption and excessive production, where discarded items are reborn as exquisite works of art. Her dedication to sustainability and creative reimagining is a powerful testament to the beauty of repurposing and redefining our connection with the material world.
